by John Gibson, RA 1790-l866. c.1840. Marble, 170.2 cm. Amgueddfa Cymru Caerdydd [National Museum of Wales, Cardiff]. Accession Number: NMW A 542. [Click on images to enlarge them.]
The museum's label explains that “The Greeks told of woman warriors called Amazons, who wore short tunics and pointed caps. Gibson's Amazon has dropped her shield and axe and stoops to look at a wound on her thigh. Gibson has noticed how women in the streets of Rome would turn and look backwards at their heel while drawing up their dress. He modelled the action in clay and then invented a subject to fit.”
