Gaia

Francis Derwent Wood, R.A. (1871-1926)

Bronze with green marble socle

35 cm high plus 3.2 cm socle

The earth goddess, Gaia, pulls on her breasts, indicating her universal nurture. The National Gallery in Berlin has Johann Gottfriend Schadow's 1813 Natura (Genius der Natura), which provides a more static representation of the same allegorical figure. David Allan suggests that this bronze and the one of a nude figure holding a sea shell to her ear (image) might relate to La Moqueuse, since all three statues apparently depict the same model.
