One of a set showing the princes and princess of the royal family crowning the tarsia panels in the nave, this medallion portrays Albert and Victoria's seventh child and third son. [Commentary continues below.]

Thanks to their resemblance to his father, both Prince Arthur and Prince Alfred ("Affie") were much favoured by their parents, but the latter's propensity for telling fibs alienated him from the queen's affections (see Ridley 40). Prince Arthur, however, continued to please. Later Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, he was always interested in the military. Already in uniform here, he was destined to become Governor-General of Canada.
