John Holloway's pioneering The Victorian Sage (1953), which does not discuss Ruskin, properly emphasizes the secular prophets, rhetorical and poetic devices but does not succeed in defining a coherent genre. The Art of Victorian Prose, eds. George Levine and William Madden (N. Y., 1968), contains many valuable contributions to the still-necessary critical theory of Victorian non-fiction.
