In the “Venetian Index,” Ruskin’s brief guide to Venetian architecture included near the end of the third volume of The Stones of Venice, he describes the Fondaca de’ Tedeschi as “a huge and ugly building near the Rialto, rendered, however, peculiarly interesting by remnants of the Frescos of Giorgione with which it was once covered” (11.378). The editors of the Library Ediiton point out that in later issues of the “Travellers’s Edition” he added that it now served as the main postoffice (11.43n).
