Mary is presented with her foot on a representation of Satan, thus illustrating Genesis 3:15 — a scriptural text very popular with Victorians [GPL].

Albert Hickson wrote in 2014, “You were very lucky with your photo of the Madonna and Child. It has been covered with a cylinder of transparent plastic for many many years, which makes a decent photo well nigh impossible.”
