A Pan-Anglican Oversight

John Tenniel

1867

Wood engraving

Punch (19 October 1867)

Anxious Wife. “Any help for our difficulties, dear?”

Resigned Husband. “O, no, Love. We poor curates ar enot even mentioned!”

Tenniel comments on on of the great injustices in the Victorian church: badly underpaid clergy with families working as curates on a pittance while wealthy non-resident clergymen received the salaries for several parishes. The Pan-Anglican synod mocked in another Punch caricature ignored this issue.
