This cartoon llustrates the poem on the facing page, "The Split in The States," which attributes the antipathy between the Corsican-like twins wearing the garb of the American frontier to "one unhappy blot, / The taint of Slavery" (lines 51-52), and expresses the fervent wish that they "remain united still" (line 3).
