At 1:00 P. M. on 13 August 1842, the correspondent for The Illustrated London News filed a story about events at Preston, the original of Coketown in Charles Dickens's Hard Times (1854). On the evening of 12 August a large meeting of unemployed factory workers turned out the workers at Catteral and Company, and proceeded to damage the factories of Sleddon and Company and other firms at the end of town. The 72nd regiment restored the peace, at the expense of two workers' lives (article appears on p. 233; image p. 236).
