“On the Pit Brow, shows a truck of coals passing over the weighing machine before its contents are added to the heap at the ‘lip.’ To each truck is attached a tin tally bearing the number of the collier by whom it has been sent up, and this being called out by a boy, the weight of the coals is set down against it in a book by the master's ‘weigher’ in the cabin, the register being watched on behalf of the men by the ‘check-weigher.’ When the trucks are emptied the tallies are taken off by a boy, whose duty it is to collect them for the use of the men next day” (283).
