, by William Widgery (1822-1893). Oil on canvas. H 74.3 x W 151 cm. Collection: Torre Abbey Museum, Torquay. Accession no. A7, given by Harry Geen, c.1942.
This peaceful scene shows several ponies, two of them handsome greys and the others black and chestnut, beside a small, high-banked moorland stream. In the foreground, low, typically variegated moorland plants cling to the rough ground, spreading into an area illuminated by the last glow of sunlight. There are craggy hills in the distance and the sky is cloudy above the golden-bright horizon. There is nothing dull or featureless about this lovely moorland scene.
