“The thunder of the Straand, and the smoke of the river steamers, now reaches the spot which was “as quiet as the country,” and as pleasant withal; and in front, beyond the trees and the flowers, where the river once stretched largely at ease, there is the new Victoria Embankment, with its restless stream of cabs, and an unlovely square building of red brick, and the strange, unhomely quaintness of Cleopatra's Needle.”
