In December 1916, the Pissarros left their cottage in Fishpond, Dorset, and went to stay in another one in Coldharbour, Surrey, near Dorking. The new place was called Ivy Cottage and they rented it for just a guinea a week, including "attendance and light" (Meadmore 152). The highest village in the lovely Surrey Hills, with extensive views, Coldharbour was popular with writers and artists of all kinds (the area is strongly associated with the composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams, for example), and Pissarro found its attractions even in the winter months. — Jacqueline Banerjee
