Ruth Gleaning

Lucien Pissarro (1863-1944)

Carrying a bundle of corn in her apron, Ruth stoops to pick up more stray stalks of grain. With clogs and a bonnet she could be in Holland. The Old Testament story gains a universal flavour. Two other gleaners are seen, one straightening up as if to ease her back.
