Here, Pickersgill paints his own portrait in his late twenties, at the height of his youthful promise. By this stage, he had twice won awards in the competition to decorate the Palace of Westminster, married in the same year (1847) that he won the larger award, and been elected that year too as a very young Associate of the Royal Academy. In the three-quarter length portrait, he holds a striking pose, smartly dressed with a grey cravat, and holding in one hand a brush, and, in the other, "a mahlstick (used to steady the hand and keep it away from areas of wet paint" ("Frederick Richard Pickersgill").
