A Fête Day

A Fête Day by Mortimer Menpes. 1901. Watercolor. Source: Japan: A Record in Colour, facing p. 120. This is clearly in the precinct of a shrine or temple in early spring when the trees are just coming into blossom. In the foreground is a large stone lantern, and the crowds are massed all around the stalls and shrine buildings. There is nothing to compare with the festive atmosphere on such a day, when incense fills the air and people are all of good cheer. — Jacqueline Banerjee
