Long travelled to Spain at the suggestion of John Phillip and at first painted Spanish subjects. In 1874 he visited Egypt and Syria, and began a very successful career as an Orientalist painter. He developed a rich, exotic style, specialising in opulent biblical stories and life in ancient Egypt. His Daughters of Our Empire series of typified female figures was commissioned by Agnew’s in 1887 for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
