Study of a Tree, Verona

Study of a Tree, Verona by Frederic Lord Leighton, P. R. A. (1830-1896). 1856. Pencil, 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Monogrammed; inscribed 'Verona' and dated 1856. Provenance: With Martyn Gregory

The Giardino Giusti in Verona has trees very like this, with a stone bath very similar to that depicted here. This extraordinary anthropomorphic drawing belongs to a group of meticulous studies of flowers, foliage and architectural details executed during the 1850s while Leighton was living in France and Italy. Few were as expressive as this. — Rupert Maas
