La Ferme au Grand Arbre
(The Farm at the Large Tree)
Alphonse Legros
Etching, drypoint and ? aquatint in black ink on ivory paper; 125/8 x 101/8 inches (32.0 x 25.7 cm) – plate mark.
Collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, accession no. 1946.4.8.
This etching exists in five states but impressions of the first four states are very rare. In this etching Legros has again incorporated farm buildings in the background but the large tree in the foreground to the right is the predominant focus. Much more than usual this etching is very densely hatched, particularly in the tree and vegetation in the foreground and in the farmhouse.
