George Elgar Hicks (1824-1914) made his reputation painting diverse London crowds in scenes from everyday life — at the bank in Dividend Day, Bank of England (1859), at the post in The General Post Office, One Minute to Six (1860), and at a fish market in Billingsgate Market (1870).
