Figures from Raphael's "School of Athens"

Solomon Alexander Hart, RA (1806-1881)

Probably 1842

Pencil and watercolour on cream wove paper

245 mm x 165 mm

Collection of the Royal Academy of Arts

Object number 03/7412

Bequeathed by Richard Phené Spiers, 1916

This is an example of a number of works copied from the Old Masters. Some such copies date from Hart's trip to Italy, 1841-42, but others come from paintings in the Louvre a few years later, or from nearer home — the National Gallery or Dulwich Art Gallery — sometimes also from prints.
