James Dafforne reports that this engraving was taken from a picture never exhibited, "in fact, ... little more than a finished sketch," but he correctly identifies it as being of the interior "of a church in Venice" and praises it for its effective treatment of a simple subject, especially with regard to "the skilful management of the chiaroscuro" (104). This is one instance where the engraving is rather more appealing than the painting itself, which is somber in tone, and less relieved by the passage of light.
