John Fulleylove

John Fulleylove was born in Leicester on August 18, 1845, the son of John Fulleylove, a carriage maker, and his wife Elizabeth. John was educated in day-schools in Leicester. At about age sixteen he was apprenticed to the local Leicester architectural firm of Flint, Shenton and Baker. Fulleylove as well received some instruction in painting from the drawing-master Henry Ward. Eventually Fulleylove decided to abandon his architectural studies to concentrate on his work as an artist and illustrator. From about 1871 he started to exhibit his work in London, including at the Royal Academy from 1873. He exhibited primarily at the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He also exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery and widely in provincial centres like Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester. He had a number of one-man shows at the Fine Art Society in London. He was elected ARI in 1878, RI in 1879, ROI in 1883 and VPROI in 1906. He won a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889 and an honourable mention in 1900.

In 1878 Fulleylove married fellow artist Elizabeth Sara Elgood, the sister of the Leicester based watercolour artist George Samuel Elgood. A few years after their marriage they left Leicester for London in 1883, settling initially in a large fashionable house in Mecklenburgh Square, Bloomsbury. In 1893 the couple moved to Great Russell Street before ultimately settling in Church Row in Hampstead in 1894. Fulleylove travelled widely in search of subjects, visiting countries such as France, Italy, Greece and the Middle East. His watercolours provided illustrations for several travel books on the regions, particularly those published by the firm A & C. Black. He also did illustrations for The Illustrated London News. In 1908 his health deteriorated suddenly and he died at Hampstead on 22 May 1908. He was buried in Highgate Cemetery.
