According to ArtUK, “Charles Dickens was a keen amateur actor and formed a theatrical group together with the likes of Augustus Egg and Mark Lemon. Egg was a celebrated artist and painted this portrait of Dickens in the role of Sir Charles Coldstream in the production of ‘Used Up!’.
