On November 22, 1853 William Allingham wrote to Deverell asking him if he would make a drawing for a wood engraving for the title page of his book of poems entitled Day and Night Songs which was to be published shortly by Routledge. Allingham described in detail the design he had in mind and Deverell made his drawing carefully following Allingham’s idea.
