Landscape with Willows

Thomas Creswick

(circa) 1835

Oil on canvas

76 x 63 mm

In the collection of the Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro, UK.

An early example of a Creswick landscape made up almost entirely of arboreal imagery, with only limited signs of human engagement with nature in the form of a tiny figure and even smaller buildings. The painting exemplifies Constable’s influence and the darkness of Dutch masters; Creswick went on to lighten his palette and extend his chromatic range.
