Head held high as she goes about her menial task, the young Dutch woman has an innate dignity. This is another work that must have come out of Boughton's visit to Holland in 1883, which he recorded in Sketching Rambles in Holland. His illustrations there feature young women tilling the soil, working in the field, carrying or hanging up washing, retrieving jetsam from the shore, and so on. Another, though more elaborately dressed than this one, has been drawing water, and stands with her pitcher beside her (following p. 68). The Netherlands were a popular destination for artists at that time. [Click on the image to enlarge it.]
