Moving the Contents of the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow

The Hunterian Museum, part of the University of Glasgow, is noted for its collections of artifacts, artwork, and animal life. Founded in 1807, the Hunterian changed locations from High Street to the Gilmorehill campus where it currently stands today. Blackburn’s painting, depicting stuffed specimens in the noted Zoology collection being moved from one location to another, demonstrates her skill in drawing wild or exotic animals—giraffe, tiger, antelope, and polar bear—as well as domestic ones. Blackburn cleverly draws herself in the far left corner in the very act of sketching the scene she depicts. — Catherine Golden
