Designer: Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898)

Firm: Morris & Co.

Stained glass

Dedicated in 1907

St Mary the Virgin, Merton Park, in southwest London

  • Close-up of Moses
  • This is one of the windows put in the Victorian south aisle of St Mary's to commemorate the life of the property developer, horticulturalist and philanthropist John Innes, who had died in 1904. The Morris Firm's workshops were then close to the church on the bank of the River Wandle in Merton. Although both Morris himself (1834-1896) and Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) had also passed away by this time, their designs were still in use. [Commentary continues below.]

Burne-Jones's Other Windows in the church

  • Isaiah and David
  • St Mary and St John (with John Henry Dearle)
  • St Paul and St Stephen
  • Photographs, text and formatting by Jacqueline Banerjee.
