The minstrels hovering above Burne-Jones's King David, St Stephen and Samuel are typical Morris angels (see Cormack 14). As for the Burne-Jones figures themselves, here we find the first version of his Samuel figure, used later at Jesus College, Cambridge and elsewhere (see Cormack 28). The three New Testament scenes shown below the main figures are of the Nativity, the Presentation in the Temple (by Morris), and Christ blessing the children — the latter is a theme which Burne-Jones seems to have particularly liked (cf. the one at Jesus Church in Troutbeck, Cumbria).
