South Transept Window at All Saints', Putney, by Edward Burne-Jones, executed by Morris & Co. and dating from 1890. It shows an angel holding a scroll with the promise of light after darkness: "In tempore vespers erit lux." Mary as the mother of Jesus, below, suggests the source of the light. She is surrounded by female saints, with the individual attributes coming from their legends, including, on the left, Saint Dorothea with the miraculous branch bearing fruit and (on the right) the innocent St Agnes with her symbolic lamb. Delicately patterned floral quarries above much more deeply coloured drapery make an attractive background, typical of Morris & Co., and very different from the Gothic Revival canopies found in some firms' windows. This window was in memory of Edward Charlwood, who died in 1887.
