This is a study for the second figure from the right in The Garden Court, which is part of the Briar Rose series. A label on the back of the frame states, “Study for the Briar Rose series, 1870-1890. Ex-collection J. W. Mackail* *Professor Mackail was married to the artist's daughter, Margaret Burne-Jones.”
