Perhaps the information most pertinent to Waterland in the Nuclear Web is that found under the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces heading. It outlines much of the reason for European concern in the Arms Race. As the Soviet Union reached nuclear parity with the U.S. in the mid 1970s, they began to employ advanced SS-20 intermediate range ballistic missiles. This caused great concern in the European countries, particularly England and France. Thus, the Europeans agreed to deploy new U.S. longer range INF's to counteract the increased Soviet threat. The failure of the U.S. and Soviet Union to produce a workable agreement on military balance in Europe could easily account for the fear of Tom Crick's students who fully realize the threat of Nuclear War now that it is so close to home.
