Edward from Nottingham, dressed in a re-created workhouse uniform at Southwell workhouse. It can be seen here that the clothes are made of coarse fabric and are as shapeless, drab and unattractive as possible. Edward's hairstyle is appropriate to his uniform; he is wearing wooden clogs. The walls in this room originally would have been like the others in the workhouse: painted brick with no decoration. My thanks to Edward for posing for this photograph — with an appropriate expression — and to his mother for permission to use the photo on the Victorian Web.
