Private Jones Defending the Hospital Door by Harry Payne (1858-1927; military artist, not to be confused with Henry Albert Payne, RWS). The Strand (January–June 1891), 547. Photogravure of watercolour and pen and ink. This illustration accompanies the narrative of William Jones in the article ‘Stories of the Victoria Cross: told by those who have won it’. Jones’s story is visualized as a dramatic tableau in which the Zulus are beaten back and the occupants of the hospital look on fearfully. The diagonalized composition is accentuated by the effects of smoke.
