Officers of the 24th Regiment

'The Zulu War: Officers of the 24th Regiment Killed at Isandula’. Wood engraving by an unknown artist and engraver in The Illustrated London News (28 March 1879): 216. This is another detail of a full page in the newspaper showing seven of the heroes. Lieutenant Cavaye was said to have been an able officer. Lieutenant Anstey was an Australian; his body was recovered from Isandlwana.

Portrait of Lt. Anstey

The visual representation of Anstey's face is based on a surviving photograph, although the artist has accentuated the fullness of his moustache and altered the size of his eyes – so providing an idealized portrait which conveys his manly handsomeness.
