This image of perversity represents one of many late-nineteenth-century British and European examples of the Dangerous (or Fatal) Woman, some of which like this one and von Stuck's Sin, use a female figure as an allegorical representation whereas more common are the many examples of historical or mythical women such as Judith, Lilith, the Sirens, Circe, the vampire, and of course Salome. — George P.
