On a Pacific island airfield, a maintenance crew has removed the right wheel of Number 100, a P-38 with aluminum and black paint scheme. I scratchbuilt the tropical vegetation from picture wire, solder, dowels, paper, and ground foam and made the walnut diorama base. Since the model kits by Hasegawa and Monogram were in 1/87 scale, I could use HO railroad figures, ladders, and vehicles for the scene. The Preiser figures were converted from railroad personnel and painted by hand.
In January 2006 this diorama was donated to Brown University's Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection at the invitation of its curator [GPL].
