Cynthia Gamble's book traces Marcel Proust's journey in the steps of his "maître à penser," John Ruskin, from his early years as a writer, via his translations, to his great novel À la recherche du temps perdu (or, as it is now usually rendered in English, In Search of Lost Time). Incredible as it seems, Proust, who came to Ruskin with no prior knowledge of English, translated two of his works. Other surprising "interlacings" are revealed in chapters that relate to the particular places that the two writers both felt deeply about: Amiens, Chartres, the Sistine Chapel, and 22 rue de Provence, Paris. Gamble concludes by analysing mainly unpublished work by three earlier authors: René Gimpel, the famous transatlantic art connoisseur who knew Proust well; René's son, Jean Gimpel, who was a scholar of medieval technology and a magnetic iconoclast, with a Proustian salon in London; and the pioneering Proust-Ruskin writer Sybil de Souza.
The book was identified by the publishers Classiques Garniers as one of their five "most read" books of June 2021, the month in which it was published. In the following brief review, the well-known Proust scholar François de Combret praises it warmly, describing it as quite exceptional: each of the avenues of exploration mentioned above, he says, has helped to illuminate Proust's life and work in new ways. He concludes that it must be read and studied again and again, and finds himself unable to recommend it highly enough. – Jacqueline Banerjee.
Je croyais tout savoir sur Marcel Proust tant j’ai lu de biographies à son sujet. Je pensais que “La recherche” n’avail plus de secret pour moi, tant je l’ai lue et relue. Et voilà que, grâce à Cynthia Gamble, je découvre un Marcel Proust inconnu et des secrets bien cachés de “La recherche“. Autant le dire sans ambages: “Voix entrelacées” est un livre d’une qualité exceptionnelle, qui se distingue de tous les autres , ô combien nombreux, consacrés à Marcel Proust, un livre qui fera date..La conception du livre est en effet originale: la personne de Marcel Proust et son oeuvre sont pris sous le faisceau croisé de quatre projecteurs qui en révèlent les mystères. Ces quatre projecteurs forment les quatre parties du livre: localisation, traduction, le cahier René Gimpel, Lettres de Sybil de Souza. Cette savante construction aboutit à un ouvrage de référence pour tous les amoureux de Proust et à un ouvrage de découverte pour les autres.A la lumière du génie de Ruskin, l’oeuvre de Proust s’éclaire sous un autre jour et mille détails passés inaperçus, microscopiques mais révélateurs, scintillent. “Voix entrelacées” est un de ces très rares livres qu’il faut lire, relire et savourer, le crayon à la main, tant il fourmille de trouvailles délicieuses et d’aperçus originaux. Je ne saurais trop recommander cette lecture.
