Ruskin Caricatured in Punch
5 February 1876
According to Joan Abse's biography, the Punch cartoon is "a satrical response to Ruskin's support of a protest oprganized by some members of the St. George's Guild against a proposed extension of the railway which, it was feared, would bring further industriual contamination to the Lake District" (156) Ruskin can be seen going into battle to protect the beauties of nature from the dire incursion of tracks, signals and carriages.
