According to the curator of the Ruskin Museum “there is a letter from Collingwood to Dorrie about the watercolour of Ruskin in his study, which he was painting whilst Ruskin was away from Brantwood. He wrote that Laurie was posing as Ruskin, in a typical pose, familiar to both of them, at the worktable but that he thought he knew JR's face well enough to paint it from memory for the portrait likeness.”
