This may refer to the scene in Chapter IV in which young Crossjay sees Willoughby and Clara riding past, but only Clara acknowledges him. Willoughby, aloof, watching his companion keenly, does not even notice the boy. "The hue of truth was in that picture" comments the narrator (35). The artist has added to the "truth" of it by showing Clara riding slightly ahead, on the livelier of the two steeds. — Jacqueline Banerjee.
