"Iroquois" is the name early French explorers in North America gave the alliance of seven aboriginal nations who inhabited the eastern woodlands of Canada and the United States. Fierce warriors, they were allied with the British during the Anglo-French rivalries in the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries (particularly the French and Indian War of 1754-63) against the Huron-Algonquin-French alliance in Quebec. After the American Revolution, many Iroquois chose to settle north the Canadian-American border.
