Note 7, Chapter 1 of the author's Christina Rossetti in Context which the University of North Carolina Press published in 1988. It appears in the Victorian web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Like "Maude Clare" a number of Rossetti's published poems consist of stanzas selected from works much longer in manuscript form. See especially "Thy Friend and thy Father's Friend forget not," "Easter Monday," and "There Remaineth Therefore a Rest to the People of God." Although Rossetti herself did not publish the deleted stanzas under their original manuscript titles during her own lifetime, William Michael Rossetti often did so in his edition of her works. See, for instance, Poems, 2:426, 433, 435, 437, 438, 442, 445, 448, 453, 456, 462, 465, 469,472, 475.
