Lord of the Manor of Heworth, the Rev. Hornby (1821-1888) was an antiquarian and clergyman, known for his interest in the Minster. Commentary continues below.

The entry for 13 July 1816 in the York Book of Days records that the York County Savings Bank was first opened then. It goes on the say that Robert William Bilton Hornby was a "notable manager" of the bank, and gives a brief summary of his life:

Born in York at Heworth Manor, he was admitted to St Peter’s School in January 1829 as a "free scholar," before gaining degrees in theology at Durham University. Following his marriage in 1844, the family settled at Clifton Garth, where they brought up a son and three daughters. William Hornby was also an active director and trustee of the York Cemetery Co. (founded in 1837) and a noted antiquarian with a strong interest in the Minster and other York Churches. [np]

The entry concludes, "His widow placed a window by C.E. Kempe in York Minster in his memory. It is located behind the astronomical clock."
