St Augustine of Hippo is honoured here as the patron of the Augustinian Canons "who presided over the fortunes of St Mary Overie [as the original church was called then] for four hundred and thirty years" (Monroe 32). Colin Price points out that the fourth- to fifth-century ascetic is shown quite inappropriately dressed in medieval finery. Perhaps a forgivable bit of artistic licence!
