Reredos: The Four Evangelists. Antonio Salviati. 1880. St Paul's, Heslington, York. The reredos was remade at the same time as the mosaic flooring, and magnificently depicts St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke and St. John, with panels of symbolic flowers in between, such as lilies for purity. These are set against a shimmering gold background, and focused on the Maltese cross, in tribute to the time when by the church's patron, St Paul, was shipwrecked there.
