Noah’s Sacrifice
George Frederick Watts
Wood engraving by the Dalziels [1863–5]; printed from the original block.
9 x 7 inches
Dalziels’ Bible Gallery, plate 4.
Genesis, viii: 20. Another powerful representation, this time showing Noah thanking God for deliverance after the waters subside and about to sacrifice some of the birds and beasts. Watts’s composition has a sculptural effect – as if the praying figures were carved in deep relief. It is noticeable that he is completely uninterested in the background and focuses only on his epic characters.
