"Hole in the wall of the Residency made by shell that wounded Sir Henry Lawrence July 2 1857"
Lucknow was one of the key places during the Indian Mutiny/First Indian War of Independence. The revolt broke out here on 30 May 1857. Sir Henry Lawrence, the Chief Commissioner, was eventually besieged at the Residency with his forces (including some 700 loyal sepoys) and supporters, before being fatally wounded by the shell which left this hole in the Residency wall.
