Tippoo creating mayhem

Tippoo creating mayhem

William Ralston

Photomechanical reproduction of pen and ink drawing.

5 x 4¾inches

Cole and Ralston’s Tippoo , p.22.

Ralston’s talent for the humour of incongruity is richly displayed in this illustration, which shows Tippoo tangled with a drum. The terror of the drummer (who is still attached to his drum) is amusingly conveyed by his facial expression and movements, and the overall effect is intensified by the background detail of the rest of the band running for their lives.
